What is Rhode2College?

Rhode2College is a step-by-step achievement-focused program to give students the tools they need to succeed on the path to college.

Rhode2College is a 2-year program that allows eligible students to earn money for completing tasks related to college readiness. These tasks, or “milestones,” will help students keep track of important items they need to complete to apply to college, beginning in their junior year of high school.

By staying on track with the program milestones, students can earn up to $2,000 – approximately $500 between the start of their junior year and high school graduation, and approximately $1,500 once they enroll in college.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for Rhode2College?

Students attending any Rhode Island public high school (including charter schools) are eligible for this program if they:

  1. Enter their junior year in the Fall of 2018,
  2. Enrolled in the Free or Reduced Price Lunch (FRL) program in the end of their sophomore year, and
  3. Score in the top 25% of PSAT™10 scores among all public school FRL students in Rhode Island.

Approximately 1,200 are eligible for Rhode2College. All eligible students will receive a letter inviting them to enroll in Rhode2College by early October.

How does Rhode2College work?

Each month, we will send Rhode2College Scholars information about a college preparation task, or “milestone,” to complete, including a deadline and materials students need to complete it. When Scholars complete the task, they will earn both some money that they can spend right away and some money deposited in a savings account that they can access when they enroll in college.

Students

How will I know if I am eligible?

If you are eligible, you will receive an invitation letter from your school by early October from Governor Raimondo.

What kind of milestones will I need to complete?

We know that applying to college can be confusing! That’s why we’re here to help. We’ve made milestones to help you meet all the steps along the way. Examples of milestones are below:

  1. Complete a College Plan with a list of potential colleges.
  2. Study for the SAT® using Official SAT® Practice on Khan Academy®.
  3. Improve your SAT® score compared to your PSAT™10 score.
  4. Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
  5. Submit college applications.

How will I earn money?

You will get paid two ways as a Rhode2College Scholar: Cash-for-Completion and Savings Funds.

Every time you complete a milestone, you will earn Cash-for-Completion, which is money that you can spend now, and Savings Funds, which is a larger amount of money that will be deposited into a savings account in your name.

You will earn your Cash-for-Completion on an electronic gift card, which you can access on your phone or print out. Your Savings Funds will be deposited into an account in your name. You can access your Savings Funds when you enroll in any accredited higher education institution.

What happens if I don’t complete a milestone? If I miss one milestone, can I still do the others?

You will earn money for every milestone you complete. If you don’t complete a milestone, you won’t earn money for it.

However, if you don’t finish one milestone by its deadline, you’ll still be a Rhode2College Scholar! You can keep earning Cash-for-Completion and Savings Funds on the next milestones, and all money you’ve earned as Savings Funds will still be available to you when you enroll in college.

What if I want to opt out of the program before it is over? Do I get to keep the money I’ve already made?

You can opt out of Rhode2College at any time before it ends. You will already have access to any Cash-for-Completion you’ve earned, but will not keep any Savings Funds.

Do I have to go to college in Rhode Island to be able to get my Savings Funds?

No. We want you to go to the best college for you! As a Rhode2College Scholar, you can access your Savings Funds when you enroll in any accredited higher education institution.

What if I want to take a break between graduating high school and starting college?

You will already have access to any Cash-for-Completion you’ve earned, but to access your Savings Funds, you will need to enroll and matriculate by the Fall after your high school graduation.
